Six arrested for attempting to smuggle drugs into Craven Co. jail

NEW BERN, Craven County - An inmate who tried to smuggle drugs into the Craven County jail was one of six arrested on Tuesday.

The Craven County Sheriff's Office determined the inmate, Clayton James Wright, 19, was attempting to smuggle the drugs into the jail. He was working offsite as part of a work detail with other inmates. The contraband and drugs were left at a location to be picked up. An investigation allowed officers to intercept the package before it made it to the jail.

Arrested and charged in the operation were:

-- Clayton James Wright, 19, of 7745 River Road, Vanceboro is charged with felony conspiracy to sell/deliver marijuana and felony attempt to possess controlled substance on jail premises. -- April Dawn Kirkman, 42, of 104 Sterling Drive, Vanceboro is charged with felony conspiracy to sell/deliver marijuana and felony aid & abet providing drugs to inmate. -- Melody Wright Long, 47, of 104 Sterling Drive, Vanceboro is charged with felony conspiracy to sell/deliver marijuana, felony providing drugs to inmate, and giving tobacco to inmate. -- Monte Deshawn Dawson Jr., 20, of 1445 State Camp Road, Vanceboro is charged with felony conspiracy to sell/deliver marijuana, felony providing drugs to inmate, and giving tobacco to inmate. -- Edward Earl Harrington, 54, of 104 Emma Place, Vanceboro is charged with felony conspiracy to sell/deliver, felony attempt to possess controlled substance on jail premises, and possession of tobacco by inmate. -- Erica Josheena Patrick, 29, of 112 Ayden Drive, Vanceboro is charged with felony conspiracy to sell/deliver marijuana and felony aid & abet providing drugs to inmate.
