NEW BERN, Craven County - The U.S. Forest Service has closed several roads and trails in the Croatan National Forest for up to six weeks for fuel reduction work.

The roads and trails that will be closed are Forest Service Road (FSR) 169 (Little Deep Creek), FSR 147 (Billfinger Road) and a portion of the Neusiok Trail (Trail 503) from the end of FSR 123 (Alligator Tram Road) to the intersection of FSR 147 (Billfinger Road).

Fuel reduction work will take place in the Little Deep Creek area is done to limit the chance of a forest fire breaking out. The work will also improve habitat for fire-adapted species such as the endangered Red Cockaded Woodpecker. It will also help restore the longleaf pine ecosytem.

The closures may be extended if weather causes work delays.
