Since 1985, Sponsors for Academic Talent, Inc. (SAT) in cooperation with Onslow County Schools has awarded scholarships to high school seniors for academic excellence and community service. Seniors meeting certain criteria are guaranteed either a $500 or $1,000 scholarship. On May 25, 86 SAT Scholarship recipients were recognized, representing each of OCS's seven high Schools. Together these scholars completed just over 10,766 hours of community service for agencies supporting citizens of Onslow County. They will receive a combined $81,500 in scholarship funds. For the fourth year, in honor and in memory of SAT's founder Dr. Kay Gresham, one high school student received an additional $1,000 scholarship. After much deliberation, given the vast amount of talent among all the SAT scholars, Davis Long, was selected for best exemplifying the traits and character of Dr. Gresham -- service above self. Davis, a student at Jacksonville High School, immersed himself in the most rigorous curriculum through the International Baccalaureate Career Program and will be one of the few in the state to graduate with a IBCP certificate in business. He plans to study engineering but is undecided on a college. He will choose between NC State, University of Alabama, and ECU. His community service hours encompass multiple community programs and organizations including Christmas Cheer, Boy Scouts, Onslow County Museum and OC Public Library. He well exceeds the 100 hours to qualify him for the $1,000 scholarship. In addition to community outreach he has taken on leadership roles within several clubs and organizations at JHS.
