NEW BERN, Craven County - A group of 144 runners of all ages showed up early Sunday morning at Union Point Park in New Bern to participate in the 6th Annual Hope for Warriors 5K and one mile run.

Hope for the Warriors is a nonprofit organization that supports veterans, post-9/11 service members, their families, as well as families of the fallen. The organization began at Camp Lejeune and has since taken off. According to Race Series Manager, Rebecca Herron, over $40,000 has been raised by the New Bern community alone. Major General Tom Braaten gave opening remarks before the race and spoke about inclusion, especially when it comes to veterans who may be disabled. He is a volunteer for the organization. "It's a great feeling to know that something as small as this can make such a big difference in the lives of the young men and women who have served us," Bratten said.
