NEW BERN, Craven County - The 12th annual Neuse River Bridge Run took off Saturday morning. The run featured a half marathon, a 10k and a 5K March for Sickle Cell.

The race was postponed in October last year due to Hurricane Matthew.

The races raise money for eight local non profit organizations: Craven Arts Council, Craven Community College Foundation, CarollinaEast Foundation, Mediation Center of Eastern NC, MERCI Clinic, Religious Community Services, Promise Place and Twin Rivers YMCA.

"What's motivating for a lot of us is that its generated from the community and it benefits the community so its local folks helping local folks," said Gary Kenefick, Neuse River Run Committee Chairperson.

Races began at Union Point Park in New Bern, with headquarters at the nearby New Bern Riverfront Convention Center at 203 South Front Street.

NewsChannel 12 morning anchor Lauren Arnott was the MC of the event and presented awards to the winner of each event. Once the runners cooled down, they were serenaded by guest country singer and New Bern native Bryan Mayer.
