JACKSONVILLE, Onslow County - Jacksonville residents, particularly those that frequent Western Boulevard, are likely used to seeing a gaggle of geese that often cross the roadway.

Until this past weekend, that is, when residents were alarmed to find seven or eight of the geese appear to be run down, leaving a messy roadside grave of feathers and guts.

Residents on Sunday morning began seeing the gruesome images of the deceased Canadian geese on Facebook. Multiple residents said it was not uncommon for the geese to cross the road, but traffic would halt to allow them to pass. Given the state of the roadkill, residents tell NewsChannel 12 that it is highly likely the geese were intentionally run over. Jacksoville Police, however, did not respond to requests for comment.

According to officers from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, the Canadian geese are federally protected under to Migratory Bird Act.
