Officer, shoplifting suspect identified; investigation continues
GREENVILLE, Pitt County - The Greenville Police Department released the name of the police officer involved in Tuesday's shooting. The State Bureau of Investigation has also released the name of the suspected shoplifter who was killed.
GPD Officer Timothy Greene was off-duty and was shopping at Academy Sports when someone alerted him to a man who was allegedly shoplifting. Greene confronted the alleged shoplifter outside of the store, identified himself and displayed his credentials, officials with GPD said.
A struggle ensued and the suspect attempted to attack Officer Greene with a knife. Greene was able to defend himself by drawing his firearm and shooting the suspect, officials said. The suspect, identified as David Melton, 35, of Goldsboro, died at the scene.
"Greene is a nearly 10-year veteran of the Greenville Police Department. He is assigned to GPD's Neighborhood Patrol Unit," officials said in a press release. "Greene has been placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of the investigation. This is standard protocol any time an officer is involved in a shooting."
GPD Chief Mark Holtzman requested the State Bureau of Investigation to conduct an independent investigation into the shooting. GPD will also be conducting an internal investigation.
Both of these moves are standard protocol, officials said.
