POLICE: Beware of Bears in Beaufort
BEAUFORT, Carteret County - Beware of wild bears in the coastal town of Beaufort. Police in the region reported several sightings and issued a warning to local residents and visitors.
The warning from Beaufort Police reads as follows:
Over the last few days there have been several bear sightings in Beaufort. The majority of the sightings have been in the area between the 400 block of Pine Street, 500 block of Turner Street and the 500 block of Mulberry Street. One sighting was reported in the Ricks Avenue area.
Wildlife officials have been notified and the situation is being monitored. It is not uncommon for wildlife to venture into town from time to time and we expect that the bear will eventually find its way back into the wild on its own. With that in mind we would like to ask that the citizens of Beaufort take steps to avoid any unfortunate encounters with the bear.
Please do not try to feed the bear and be mindful of what you are placing in your trash cans and when. A lack of readily available food may be a great motivation for the bear to leave town sooner. Please do not try to make contact with the bear. Do not try to trap or kill the bear as either of these actions are illegal. Be mindful of your pets and children when they are outside and do not leave them unattended.
If the bear is on your property or you have seen the bear and it is not acting aggressively, please stay in your home or your vehicle and call 252-726-7911.
If the bear is posing an active threat to life or property please call 911.
