Pipe replacement will close one lane on New Bern road

NEW BERN, Craven County - A drainage pipe replacement project will require the closure of one lane in New Bern. Broad Creek Road, north of Catherine Street will close on March 27, at 7:30 a.m. and continue through March 31. Maintenance crews will construct a temporary bridge over the work zone in order to maintain the flow of traffic. "This is a heavily traveled route, and the bridge will minimize delays" said Craven County Maintenance Engineer Gordy Eure. "However, drivers should still be cautious, obey the posted speed limit and pay attention to the signs." The existing pipe has deteriorated over the years and caused recent pavement failures in the area. "Cracks formed as the pipe aged, and the leaking water eroded the base below the road surface," said Eure. "The new pipe is better constructed and should last a long time."
