Phone scam alert in Dare County


MANTEO, Dare County - Dare County Sheriff J.D. Doughtie issued a phone scam alert. The Sheriff's Office has received several reports from citizens receiving scam phone calls from subjects claiming the people owe money ( for various reasons) and they are to pay immediately to avoid a warrant being issues and/or arrested.

The caller wants the person to pay via credit card over the phone or to go and get a type of "money gram" or other electronic payment and send it electronically.

Do not send money or funds to the callers. Contact the Sheriff's Office at (252) 475-5980.

Here are some safety tips from the Sheriff's Office:

-Do not believe your caller I.D. Scammers can fake caller I.D. numbers

-Spot imposters that claim to be from a Government entity or charitable organization. Do not give our personal information and/or do not pay with a credit card over the phone.

-Do not be in a hurry to make a decision.

-Hang up on robocalls

-Do not make wire/ electronic money transfers to an unknown person.
