Pasquotank Correctional Institution still on lockdown
ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. - The Pasquotank Correctional Institution remains on lockdown as three prison employees continue to recover from the inmate escape attempt last week.
In a press release, the N.C. Department of Public Safety said Correctional Officer Wendy Shannon, Correctional Officer George Midgett and maintenance worker Geoffrey Howe remain at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Virginia for treatment for injuries suffered during the failed escape attempt.
Correctional Officer Justin Smith and Correction Enterprises Manager Veronica Darden were killed by inmates in the escape attempt. Ten other prison employees were during the failed escape attempt. Members of the Prison Emergency Response Team from other state prison facilities, along with other support staff, are providing assistance to the Pasquotank prison staff.
The Pasquotank County Sheriff's Office, along with the State Bureau of Investigation, continue to investigate the incident, officials said.
