PACTOLUS, Pitt County - The Pactolus Fire Department in Pitt County is the recipient of more than $20,000 in new rescue equipment thanks to a grant from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation.

The department will unveil its new battery-operated extrication equipment in a brief ceremony on Wednesday. The equipment will be critical for the department, which often responds to accidents along US 264 between Greenville and Washington.

Department officials say the new equipment will allow the first responders to remove victims from vehicles faster.

"The mental impact of being trapped will resonate long after the victim has fully recovered from their injuries," Pactolus FD Assistant Chief Jim Bladel said in a press release. "Improving our equipment would help alleviate these possibilities in the future.
