ONWASA workers return home after relief work in Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Onslow County - Some of our very own utility workers in Onslow County returned home Wednesday after their relief mission in Florida post Hurricane Irma.

There were a lot of cheers and hugs at the ONWASA headquarters when the team returned Wednesday. A large crowd gathered to welcome home the six-member volunteer crew who sent most of their time in the Florida Keys helping restore water to residents.

Crew members said the areas they saw were still flattened by Hurricane Irma, even cinder block houses.

"I'm very proud," said Mary Futrell, who was welcoming her son home. "When I found he was going, I was proud that he wanted to pitch in and help everybody and just do his thing like he always does around the house. He's helping somebody all the time."

The effort was a joint venture between ONWASA and the City of Jacksonville.
