Sue Lynn Whitehurst, guidance counselor/Student Services Department chair at Jacksonville High School, has been awarded 2017 OCS School Counselor of the Year. The announcement came May 11, during a school counselor meeting. Fellow counselors nominated her and she received many accolades from the group and administrators at Jacksonville High School. Whitehurst, a product of Onslow County Schools, has served OCS for 25 years, the last five as the guidance counselor/Student Services Department chair at Jacksonville High School. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from UNCW-Wilmington and a Master's of Science in Counselor Education from East Carolina University. JHS Assistant Principal Stacey Gillette said Whitehurst is an exceptional educator and counselor who goes above and beyond to bring every opportunity she can to the students of JHS. Each year her goal is to surpass previous years' scholarship earnings. Thus far the JHS class of 2017 has secured over $3.5 million, and the number continues to grow. "She carries her students' stories, trials, hardships, and triumphs with her, and her door is always open," Gillette said. "She leads with patience and grace, and she gives her whole heart to her students."
