One person dead in off-duty officer-involved shooting in Greenville

GREENVILLE, Pitt County - Greenville Police are responding to a reported shooting that happened at Academy Sports + Outdoors where a suspected shoplifter was killed by an off-duty officer.

The store is located at 3428 S Memorial Dr. According to a press release from Greenville Police, dispatchers received a call that a police officer was involved in a shooting in the parking lot of Academy Sports. A preliminary investigation indicated the officer was off-duty and was shopping at Academy Sports when a civilian alerted him to a man who was allegedly shoplifting.

The press release stated the officer confronted the alleged shoplifter outside of the store, identified himself and displayed his credentials. A struggle then ensued and the suspect attempted to attack the officer with a knife. The officer, who was in close proximity to the suspect,  was able to draw his firearm and fired at the suspect. The suspect died at the scene.

Greenville Police say per protocol, GPD Chief Mark Holtzman has requested the State Bureau of Investigation conduct the primary investigation into the shooting. GPD will also be conducting an internal investigation, per protocol in officer- involved shootings.

The suspect is a 35-year-old white male. The names of both the suspect and the officer will be released at a later time.
