Ocracoke readies for annual fig festival
OCRACOKE, Hyde County - It's the best time of the year to completely fig out - the annual Ocracoke Fig Fest is here.
The two-day festival on Ocracoke Island starts Friday evening and features booths of locally made fig creations, fig history, fig tastings, a fig cake bake-off, a square dance along with crafts and games. The festival celebrates the fruit that was first brought to the 16-square mile island more than two centuries ago.
There are at least nine types of figs that grow on the island.
