NORTH TOPSAIL BEACH, Onslow County - North Topsail Beach saw heavier waves and higher tides than usual today, all thanks to Hurricane Maria, the Category 1 storm sitting just off North Carolina shores.

North Topsail Beach officials said there aren't any plans currently for additional storm preparation ahead of Hurricane Maria. Still, the effects can be seen along the beach and even in the road.

The dune behind one rental property in the area is completely gone. Its renters said that the water is continually splashing against the house. The water is also bleeding into the road in front of the property.

"You can see up to the dunes themselves we're starting to get some erosion," Dave Cowles, a frequent beachgoer, said. "[I] saw a little wash through on beach access 39 up the road here where last night at high tide it must have made it into the parking lot."

Onslow County Emergency Management is encouraging residents to tie down any loose objects around their houses to prevent damage.
