Newport fire officially contained despite hot spots
Newport, CARTERET COUNTY - Firefighters and forest rangers managed to contain the fire burning near Crestwood lane in Newport.
Residents say they began seeing smoke around 9 a.m on Friday. Firefighters had most of the fire extinguished by Saturday, but the fire will not be considered under control until they are able to put out all the hot spots.
According to a Carteret County forest ranger, they determined 100 acres of land was burned, 95 acres of that is private property and the other part belongs to the Croatan National Forest. Overall, 158 homes were threatened.
Rangers say they are still investigating the cause of the fire.
"We looked into it where the origin was, where the fire started and we found a debris pile and we are looking into it further to find out who is responsible," said Bret Toler, Carteret County Forest Ranger.
Toler says law enforcement will determine whether the person responsible for starting the fire will face charges. Toler says rangers will continue to work on the hot spots and will keep a close eye on the area for the next few weeks.
