A ceremony was held Tuesday in downtown Jacksonville to not only mark Police Officers Memorial Day but to also pay special tribute to two fallen law enforcement officials.

A Remembrance Garden now stands behind the Jacksonville Public Safety building as a constant reminder of the public safety officers who paid the ultimate sacrifice while protecting and serving their community.

The names of Officer Terry Lanier, who died in the line of duty in 1979, and Detective William Whitehead, who died in 1981, are now on the memorial. Their names and the sacrifices each made were recognized at Tuesday's observance ceremony.

"Those all are etched in your memory," said Jack Bright, chairman of the Onslow County Board of Commissioners. "These ones who have fallen ... you never forget them. You never forget their face, you never forget their smile. I can hear their voice right now ... I know exactly what their voice sounds like."
