New Bern man pleads guilty to drug charges, sentenced to prison

NEW BERN, Craven County - A New Bern man could spend up to 10 years in prison.

District Attorney Scott Thomas said Andre Melvin, 33, pled guilty to a list of drug-related charges.

The Coastal Narcotics Enforcement Team investigated Melvin's drug activities. Initially, CNET conducted a controlled purchase of heroin from Melvin using a confidential informant, following it up with a controlled purchase of cocaine as well.

CNET also investigated Ronni Riggins at the same time. The agents followed Riggins to the Walmart parking lot on Neuse Boulevard, where she met with Melvin, who quickly got into and out of her car, leaving in his own vehicle. The CNET team split and followed both vehicles. Riggins has previously pled guilty to her drug charges and was sentenced to prison.

Melvin's car stopped at the gas pumps, where CNET agents approached the car. Melvin was ordered to remain in the car, but he pushed past officers and ran. Officers chased and tackled Melvin to the ground, finding him in possession of more than a thousand dollars in cash. While running, officials said Melvin had thrown a plastic bag containing 200 glassine envelopes of heroin, weighing nearly 5 grams total.
