NEW BERN, Craven County - Nick Darwent and his wife own a timeshare in the U.S. Virgin Islands. They have vacationed there each year since 1998.

Living in New Bern and with no access to the property there, they can only speculate the total damage Irma may have caused. The storm left the island of St. Thomas and the areas around it were left devastated.

"Oh it means a lot to us, to get down there and renew friendships and make new friends every year," Darwent said.

From pictures he's seen, he believes the property is intact but can't know for certain until he sees it in person when the couple plans to head there in March. What he does know is the tight-knit community he fell in love with many years ago is more is more than capable of rebuilding.

"As far as rebuilding, they say this is our home, we're gonna build it back, it may take a while," Darwent said. "But when it comes down to it, its a beautiful place. Its a beautiful little island, its got so much to offer.

"Onward and upward."
