New Bern fire captain gets big surprise -- the wallet he lost four years ago

NEW BERN, Craven County - A New Bern City Public Works employee is getting praise for finding and returning a missing wallet that belongs to a City of New Bern Fire Department Captain who lost it four years ago.

"Immediately I found the wallet. I opened it up and I saw it was still kind of intact and I noticed the ID was still in there," Desmond Brinkley said of discovering the wallet. "I gave it to my supervisor and he gave it to our HR people at the office and she contacted Mr. Anthony and I put a smile on his face."

When New Bern Fire Captain Anthony Roeburg met Brinkley for the first time after returning his wallet, he had a big smile on his face.

"Hey buddy -- how are you doing? My new friend here, a fellow city employee, who would ever thought," Roeburg said.

Roeburg's wallet had been missing for four years. It was taken from a local gas station after he forgot it at the gas pump.

"By the time I got home about 15 minutes later, I realized I didn't have my wallet," Roeburg said. "I called the gas station and asked the attendant to go look and see if it was still there and he advised no -- it was gone."

The wallet had cash, check cards, Roeburg's ID, Social Security card and badge.

"The main thing I was concerned about was the badge and the ID's being used or misused," Roeburg said.

Luckily enough, the wallet was hidden away in the bushes at the corner of B and E streets in New Bern. The only thing missing from the wallet was $30 and his check card, which he immediately cancelled after losing the wallet four years ago.

"We stumbled upon something very valuable and his ID was still intact, just a little dirty, but it was just good to give it back and for him to get it back," Brinkley said.

As a thank you, Roeburg gave Brinkley an envelope of appreciation.

"I want to give you this too," Roeburg said. "It's just a thank you card and I just want to let you know that I appreciate you and the whole city appreciated you too -- not just for what you did finding this wallet, but you guys work hard day in and out and you deserve a lot more kudos -- this is your day bro."

Brinkley was also given an invitation for his nephews to visit the fire house in New Bern.
