GREENVILLE, Pitt County - The NC Department of Transportation will close a portion of NC 222 in Pitt County to replace a culvert that was damaged during Hurricane Matthew.

The stretch of road is a quarter-mile west of Spain Bridge Road in Falkland. It will close to traffic beginning at 8 a.m. on Wednesday with construction completion expected to finish by July 21. "We temporarily repaired the existing culvert after the storm in order to reopen the road to traffic," said Pitt County Resident Engineer Cadmus Capehart in a press release. "This allowed motorists to use the road while we put a contractor in place to remove the damaged culvert and replace it with a new one." Most traffic will be detoured to Spain Bridge Road, Sharp Point Road and NC 43. Trucks will be detoured to King Farm Road and Kings Crossroads Road. Transportation officials urge travelers to use caution on the detour routes during the closure. "Drivers should be aware that there is a lot of truck traffic in this area to and from the rock quarry," Capehart said. "Please keep a safe following distance."
