GREENVILLE, Pitt County - Members of the state NAACP and Forward Together Moral Movement will join the Pitt County branch of the NAACP for "Freedom Friday: I am Dontae Sharpe" vigil.

The event will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Friday at the Pitt County Courthouse, located at 100 W. 3rd St. in Greenville.

The North Carolina NAACP and family of Sharpe will deliver District Attorney Kim Robb what it says are thousands of petitions that have been signed requesting her to "Do Justice for Dontae Sharpe."

Sharpe has been in prison for 23 years for a crime many say he didn't commit. He's been in prison since he was 19, when he received a life sentence for the murder of 33-year-old George Radcliffe in Greenville. Legal documents show Radcliffe was shot during a drug buy in 1994.

An eyewitness recanted her testimony just months after the trial.
