Mother of crash victim speaks on family's grief, daughter's life
NEW BERN, Craven County - Just days after her daughter was killed in a wreck on US 17 near Maysville, a local mother spoke out about her grief and her child's memory.
"Susan was my wild child, but she had a heart of gold," Ellen Purifoy said of her daughter, Susan Purifoy-McNeely, a resident of Dover. "She was just always there. I don't know what I'll do without her.
Susan grew up in Craven County, graduating from West Craven High School and then Guilford College. She was a chiropractic nurse and had just been married last fall.
In addition to her husband, Purifoy-McNeely leaves behind her mother, several siblings, nieces and nephews - many of whom looked to her as a maternal figure in their lives.
"She would help her momma and anybody else, her friends," Purifoy said. "She bought diapers. She bought food. She did whatever and she had a listening ear. People would just go to her and talk to her."
