NEW BERN, Craven County - More than 600 people gathered Monday at the National Cemetery in New Bern for a Memorial Day ceremony.

American flags were placed in front of the headstones of each of the servicemen and women laid to rest there.

"They never got to realize their dreams," event organizer and Vietnam veteran Dogbert Owsley said. "They all had dreams but they were taken away because of the war and those dreams never came to fruition.

Owsley said he was glad to see so many come out to pay tribute to fallen soldiers.

"There's a lot of things you can do on Memorial Day ... boating, picnics, seeing family, but when you take an hour or so out of your day to come out and participate and be part of this, it's just a nice community kind of thing and that's what I think we need more of."
