Military unit affected by KC-130 crash also hit by tragedy in 2015

SNEADS FERRY, Onslow County - Just hours after the Marine Corps released the names of the 16 service members killed in a KC-130 crash over Mississippi on Monday, the Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command second in charge stood in front of assembled media to deliver more details on the tragic event.

MARSOC Deputy Commander Steven Grass spoke mostly about the seven men - six Marines and one Navy corpsman - who were a part of Camp Lejeune's 2nd Raider Battalion: Staff Sgt. William Kundrat, Sgt. Chad Jenson, Sgt. Talon Leach, Sgt. Joseph Murray, Sgt. Dietrich Schmieman and Corpsman 2nd Class Ryan Lohrey.

Unfortunately, Grass said, this isn't the first tragedy in recent years to befall this group, as barely two years ago, a helicopter crash also took the lives of several Raiders.

"This unit was from the same company, the same battalion, 2nd Raider Battalion, that's experienced the loss of seven raiders in March of 2015," he said. "And that is a tragic coincidence."

For those who want to leave a message of condolence for the families, they are being collected at
