MCAS Cherry Point says repairs to Down East bridge to be extended
SEA LEVEL, Carteret County - Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point will continue work of the Thorofare Bridge facility in Sea Level through the end of August.
Structural repairs to the bulkhead at the Marine Corps' Thorofare Bridge facility off NC 12 in Sea Level began on May 15. The project closed the US Fish and Wildlife Service boat ramp and canal on the west side of NC 12 along the bridge access road. MCAS Cherry Point reports the repairs are necessary to ensure the safety of personnel operating from the facility and to prevent soil erosion. Until the project is complete, the construction activity will continue to require weekday (Monday-Friday) closures of the boat ramp. The water access point will be open on weekends (Saturday and Sunday) only. Boaters and paddlers should be prepared to make alternate launch arrangements during this period.
