JACKSONVILLE, Onslow County - A man who went missing on May 15 is now believed to have jumped to his death from a moving car, Onslow County Sheriff's Office officials said Wednesday.

Clifton "Tre" McFadden III was reported missing on May 15 after last being seen at his father's residence in Jacksonville. OCSO detectives located a body on May 23 believed to be McFadden's off the 100 block of Stella Road in Onslow County.

According to detectives, McFadden had been riding in a car with three individuals on May 15 when he began to act erratically. Those individuals told detectives he opened a passenger door and leapt from the vehicle, which was traveling between 50 and 60 mph at the time.

An autopsy of McFadden's body confirmed injuries consistent with what the witnesses told detectives. The individuals riding in the car had stopped to look for McFadden, OCSO said, but were unable to locate him.

McFadden had a history of mental health issues and detectives in the case determined no criminal action was involved in his death, despite the three individuals not calling 911 after the incident. They told detectives they assumed McFadden had survived the jump and had run off.

McFadden's body was discovered in a ditch off Stella Road, covered in vegetation.
