BELHAVEN, Beaufort County - A massive fire Wednesday night at the Day Beacon Marina in Belhaven started offshore and affected a 52-foot vessel and took more than four hours for crews to extinguish.

A man from Florida was sent to Vidant Beaufort Hospital for treatment for burns, according to Beaufort County Emergency Management. A witness said the man had run on board the affected boat in an unsuccessful effort to save a dog. The dog died in the fire.

As a result of the fire, between 300 and 350 gallons of fuel leaked out from the boat and a boom had to be established to contain the spill.

Crews from the Bath, Bunyan and Belhaven fire and police departments all responded, in addition to the Coast Guard and Fish and Wildlife agents. BCEM says the blaze - the cause of which remains undetermined - happened between 7 and 8 p.m. and wasn't fully extinguished until midnight.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
