Man dies, son injured in rip current-related incident in Atlantic Beach
ATLANTIC BEACH, Carteret County - A 59-year-old man from Nevada died and his son is currently in the hospital after a rip current incident at Fort Macon State Park on Tuesday.
Adam Snyder, Atlantic Beach Fire Chief, said they got a call about 3 p.m. Tuesday. A lifeguard pulled them both to shore but Snyder said the father started having a heart attack. They were both transported to Carteret Health Care in Morehead City, where the father died. The son is currently recovering and officials said he is doing well. Both were in the area on vacation, officials said. A moderate rip current risk was in place for the area on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. That rip current status remains in effect through Wednesday.
