Man escapes burning garage by climbing out window

NEWPORT, Carteret County - A man was forced to climb out of the second story of a garage in Newport to escape a roaring fire, according to Chief Tony Matthews of Broad & Gales Creek Fire Department.

Chief Matthews says they received a call that a three car two story detached garage was on fire at 222 Junius Drive in Newport.

The top level of the garage was converted into a living area for the owner's grandson, who was inside at the time. He was forced to climb out the second story window to escape the fire, according to Chief Matthews. Matthews says the man was treated by EMS for smoke inhalation, but did not want to go to the hospital.

The garage was completely engulfed and it took an hour to get the fire under control. The fire was extinguished in around three hours, according to Chief Matthews.

Broad & Gales Creek Fire Department., Morehead City Fire Department, Newport Fire Department and Western Carteret Fire Department all assisted in putting out the fire.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. The Carteret County Fire Marshall is now investigating.
