Man charged in death of high school student; vigil scheduled
JACKSONVILLE, Onslow County - An arrest has been made in the death of a Dixon High School student who was trying to get on the bus Monday.
The Jacksonville Daily News reports Staff Sgt. Joshua Aaron Block, 26, of Atascosa, Texas was charged with felony involuntary manslaughter and felony passing a stopped school bus causing death. Block was booked at the Onslow County Jail with a bond set at $40,000.
David Palacio, 16, was killed on Monday. First Sergeant David Oglesby with the Highway Patrol said the collision happened around 6:40 a.m. on Dawson Cabin Road near Stillwood Road. The bus was traveling toward Hwy. 17 and stopped in front of a home. The stop arm was extended on the school bus and the bus driver waved Palacio to cross.
Oglesby said the teen was struck by a black Honda Civic traveling in the opposite direction. According to officials, Block was the driver of vehicle. He is a Staff Sergeant at New River.
Palacio was taken to Onslow Memorial Hospital and was later pronounced dead.
A vigil will be held for Palacio this Friday from 7-9 p.m. at the Freedom Fountain, located at the intersection of New Bridge Street and Johnson Boulevard.
