Man arrested in non-fatal April shooting
NEW BERN, Craven County - On Wednesday, the New Bern Police Department announced the arrest of a local man in connection with a non-fatal shooting from a month before.
Police arrested Diante Smith, 21, on Tuesday evening, charging him with assault with a dealy weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and for discharging a firearm within city limits. He was booked into the Craevn County Detention Center on a $50,000 secured bond and had his first appearance in court on Wednesday.
The charges are in connection with an April 15 shooting in the 2000 block of New Bern Avenue. The victim in the case, who has not been identified, showed up at Carolina East Medical Center suffering from two gunshot wounds but was later transferred to Vidant Care. While it was not indicated where the man was shot, NBPD said the injuries he suffered were non-life threatening.
