Kinston Teens founder to speak at SXSW event

Kinston Teens founder Chris J. Suggs will be a keynote speaker at SXSW EDU, an event that focuses specifically on education.

“I’m excited for this opportunity to travel to Austin and spread the work of Kinston Teens at this amazing conference,” said Suggs in a press release. “Since I founded the organization in 2014, Kinston Teens has provided tools, resources, and spaces for young people to take leadership roles and enact meaningful change in our local schools and community. Through my keynote presentation, I hope to use the work and story of Kinston Teens to inspire individuals to take an active role in improving their communities.”

Suggs will be featured as a keynote speaker for a session entitled “The United States of Student Civic Engagement.” The aim of this session is to inspire and engage students to take charge of their education, make their voices heard, and enact tangible change. Chris and other speakers and panelists will discuss their experiences with activism from grassroots movements to school leadership to government engagement.

“The United States of Student Civic Engagement” session will be hosted by Student Voice, a student-run nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering students to advocate and create equitable schools. Suggs has previously participated in Student Voice events through his work as a Youth Advisor at Facebook, and as a part of former First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Better Make Room” college preparedness campaign.

The SXSW EDU Conference & Festival cultivates and empowers a community of engaged stakeholders to advance teaching and learning. The annual four-day event affords registrants open access to engaging sessions, immersive workshops, interactive learning experiences, film screenings, early-stage startups, business opportunities, and networking.
