Kinston students grill up veggies with famous local chef
KINSTON, Lenoir County - A group of fifth graders from Southeast Elementary School in Kinston got a chance to taste the fruits of the labor on Tuesday - thanks to a field trip to visit one of the area's most famous chefs.
Vivian Howard, owner of the Chef and Farmer and Kinston and the star of Peabody- and Emmy-Award winning PBS program "A Chef's Life," hosted the students at the Lenoir County Farmers Market, teaching them about fruits and vegetables and working with them to create a dish they could enjoy.
"I hope that they see what we have here, see what I am doing and the next time they are in the backyard and their parents are grilling out they consider the idea of throwing a vegetable on the grill," Howard said.
The benefit, she said was twofold - teaching the students about the nutritional value found in the vegetables and also the support for local growers.
