KINSTON, Lenoir County - A bizarre case in Kinston Monday night saw Kinston Police make an arrest after a man allegedly stole a vehicle to drive another man to the hospital.

At approximately 8:37 p.m., Kinston PD got a call in reference to shots fired in the 600 block of East Bright Street. While officers were en route, they were informed of a report of a stolen vehicle from the same location and that the victim of the shooting may be in the stolen vehicle headed for UNC Lenoir Hospital.

Officers located the vehicle at the hospital and learned it was driven by Michael Oates, who had used the vehicle to take the shooting victim, Juquail Koonce, to the hospital.

Oates was arrested and charged with larceny of a motor vehicle, resist, obstruct and delay and driving while license revoked. He was placed into the Lenoir County Jail on a $75,000 secured bond.

Koonce, who was treated for non-life threatening injuries, refused to cooperate with investigators over the shooting. Officers did learn from anonymous sources that the vehicle involved in the shooting was a gray or silver older model Cadillac with gold rims and tinted windows. The shooter was described as a black male with long dreadlocks.

Kinston PD found numerous shell casings along the 600 block of East Bright Street.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Kinston PD at (252) 939-3160, the TIPS LINE at (252) 939-4020 or Lenoir County Crime Stoppers at (252) 523-4444.
