Kayakers make a clean sweep of the Neuse and Trent Rivers

NEW BERN, Craven County - If you're in New Bern, you probably see the Trent and Neuse Rivers pretty often. But what you don't see is the trash that builds up along their shores. That's why the Sound Rivers organized an event to clean up the rivers in a fun way.

"There's a quote that I love that says we don't inherit the earth from our ancestors we borrow it from our children. Keeping it nice now is trying to keep it nice for future generations as well," said Katy Langley, Lower Neuse Riverkeeper.

Langley made kayaks and trash bags available to volunteers, who paddled around the rivers finding all kinds of trash.

"Plastic bottles, plastic bags, straws. Also some unusual things, some buckets and seat cushions from boats," said Langley, when describing what they found.

Even some of the participants were shocked by the amount of trash they saw.

"Before when i was kayaking I didn't really notice the garbage like when you're not looking for it you don't realize how much is there until you actually go around. Its more than I expected," said Bianca Betts, who helped collect trash.

If you missed the river clean up this time don't worry. There are already plans for another one this spring.
