Increase in discipline cases at school causes concerns for parents
NEW BERN, Craven County - An increase in discipline cases at an elementary school in Craven County led to a meeting Thursday with the superintendent of the school system.
Brinson Memorial Elementary School's recent report card indicated the amount of children with discipline issues has almost quadrupled, according to some parents at Thursday's meeting. They took their concerns to Craven County Superintendent Dr. Megan Doyle and three members of the school board.
More than 200 students have had discipline issues with 96 of them resulting in suspension.
"For that to be in an elementary school, it's really a problem," said parent Daphne Ellison. "It basically stops our children from learning what they need to be learning in the classroom."
The school is currently searching for a new principal as the current principal, Alexandria Aguiar, will retire at the end of the school year.
