Horseback trail riding business opens in New Bern
New Bern, CRAVEN COUNTY - If you love the outdoors and horses, you're in luck! There is a new way to take in the sights and sounds of the Croatan National Forest thanks to Croatan Trail Adventures.
The horseback trail riding company opened to the public on April 29th. Despite being a new business, the owner are no strangers to horses. Edward and Sandra Lloyd have been riding horses for over 20 years and boarding them at their New Bern home since 2004.
"A couple years ago we started seriously considering starting a trail riding business since we have over 300 acres available here to ride on and its just grown from there, said Edward Lloyd, owner of Croatan Trail Adventures.
On their weekend rides, they take customers for an hour and a half into the Magnolia Plantation Trail Preserve, a small oasis of of Highway 70. Some are surprised at what they see despite having lived in the area for decades.
"I live outside of Havelock and all I see is trees and bushes and I never knew there any trails out there like this," said Bonnie Miner, a new rider.
The rides are lead by experienced handlers who trained all of the horses on the trail. They believe this differs people in the area a unique way to spend the weekend. "Eventhough theres no mall within really an hours driving distance, if you step outside of the box, literally and try something outside its just amazing and your eyes can be opened and its definitely the way to spend your time," said Kara Swigert, one of the Wranglers.
The Lloyds say they hope their new business will allow people to get a much needed breath of fresh air. "TV and Xboxes and those things are all well and good but people need to get out into nature and see what's out here," said Lloyd.
Croatan Outdoor Adventures offers rides on Saturday and Sunday. Riders must be at least 10 years old and under 250 pounds.
