Home damaged by fire in Harkers Island
HARKERS ISLAND, Carteret County - A fire destroyed a home in Harkers Island on Sunday afternoon, according to Carteret County Emergency Services.
The fire happened at 765 Island Road in a single-wide mobile home. The call came in around 3:17 p.m. after a neighbor of the home noticed flames coming out of the north kitchen window, according to CCES. Samuel Willis, the owner, said a family member stayed there overnight but left around 7:30 a.m. Electricity service was connected to the home, which was under renovation. Nobody was living there.
After an investigation, it ws determined the origin came from the kitchen section of the home, in an area of a portable air conditioner unit, which was reported to have been operating.
Fire departments from Harkers Island, Otway, Marshallberg and Beaufort joined the Carteret County Fire Marshal's Office and the Carteret County Sheriff's Office.
