Hardest-hit Hwy. 55 culvert rebuilt after Hurricane Matthew

KINSTON, Lenoir County - The culvert next to Grandma's Attic Florist and Gift shop is now open after almost four months of construction.

The culvert was completely destroyed after Hurricane Matthew battered the area back in October. N.C. Department of Transportation officials said this particular culvert was the worst washout in the county.

According to NCDOT Bridge Maintenance, the culvert was redesigned to have a bigger opening for water to flow through during a storm. While this particular culvert is now open, local businesses are still not happy.

"Actually, since they've opened the road here where they fixed the culvert, it has not really increased that much traffic flow other than locals simply because the detour signs 'Hwy. 55 is closed ahead' are still remaining out there," said Vance Davis, owner of Grandma's Attic.

DOT officials say their construction crews are expected to complete the last two culverts on Hwy. 55 by the end of May.
