Heavy rains won't wash out Vanceboro Strawberry Festival

VANCEBORO, Craven County - A downpour on Friday morning wasn't stopping the organizers of the 35th annual Vanceboro Strawberry Festival from having the two-day event go on as usual.

The festivities kicked off Friday with carnival rides, vendors and activities targeted at children. Then the big day starts Saturday with a parade at 10 a.m.

It was a similar scene here last year, where rain right before the event made things just a bit muddy.

"We're open for business," vendor coordinator Brittany Spear said. "I don't want (people) to think just because they see all of this water on the ground that the show isn't going on."

But with the ground taking on a lot of water in the past 24 hours, organizers are shifting the event from the fields at Farm Life Elementary School to the parking lot.

More information about the event is online at VanceboroStrawberryFest.weebly.com.
