GREENVILLE, Pitt County - Starting Monday, Greenville Utilities customers might notice a slight change in their water.

Between June 19 and July 31, GUC will be using free chlorine as the disinfectant in the water rather than cholarmines, which it has used since the end of 2002. Users might notice a slight smell or taste difference to the water, but there is no health risk and no additional filtering needed from usual because of the temporary change, according to the utility.

A similar temporary switch was made last summer and is part of a recommendation from the Environmental Protection Agency to help keep water mains clean and clear of any potentially harmful bacteria.
