GREENVILLE, Pitt County - Greenville Utilities began "Operation Spring Clean," on Sunday. It is a preventive maintenance program aimed at ensuring that high quality water is delivered to customers. "Operation Spring Clean" is scheduled to run from March 19 through June 16.

During the 13-week program, all 629 miles of water distribution lines on GUC's system would be cleaned. The program involves opening fire hydrants and allowing them to flow freely for a short time.

"To minimize inconvenience to customers, cleaning will be conducted Sunday through Friday from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.," said Randy Emory, GUC's Director of Water Resources.

"Water service will not be interrupted because of Operation Spring Clean; however, we advise customers to avoid using water, if possible, when their lines are being cleaned," added Emory.

Although there are no health risks associated, the cleaning process involves flushing the pipes with high velocities of water, according to GUC. As a result, water may appear discolored for a short period of time. Customers are advised to avoid drinking the water or washing clothes with it until it runs clear. Emory also advised costumers to turn on the cold water faucet in the bathtub and run the water for 5 to 10 minutes until it runs clear if they experience any air or discolored water in their water lines because of of Operation Spring Clean. In addition to the schedule listed below, weekly notices will be posted on GUC's website, www.guc.com, Facebook and Twitter pages to identify areas scheduled to be cleaned. Businesses known to be open during 10 p.m. - 6 a.m. will be contacted to be advised on when cleaning will be done in their vicinity.
