GREENVILLE, Pitt County - A murder-for-hire plot was foiled in Greenville this weekend when a man contacted about killing a woman alerted police to the plan.

Greenville Police spokesperson Kristen Hunter said a man called GPD at approximately 7 a.m. on Sunday, telling authorities an acquaintance of his had contacted him about trying to kill his wife. Greenville Police set in action an undercover operation that allowed them to corroborate the caller's claims.

By Sunday afternoon, GPD had arrested 35-year-old James Edward Smith, charging him with solicitation to commit first-degree murder. He was booked into the Pitt County Jail and made his first appearance in Pitt County Superior Court Monday morning.

His bond was set at $1 million.

Hunter said investigators are still working to determine a motive for the plot.
