GREENVILLE, Pitt County - Thursday was opening day for the North Carolina State Fair. For the first time ever, you can buy beer and wine.

A new attraction called Our State Public House features 40 craft beers and wine from throughout the state. That includes a brewery in Greenville. Uptown Brewing Company's signature pale ale can be purchased during the 10-day fair and their brewmaster couldn't be more proud.

"I said 'how much do they need?' They said '10 kegs.' We were like 'okay'," said Benjamin Self, brewmaster and co-owner. "'We will send 10 kegs of our pale ale.' And we're not surprised that that's the one they chose. It's an incredible flavorful drinkable beer."

The growth of craft beers in our state is one of the big reasons the state fair went this direction. There are 215 craft breweries in North Carolina.

"They couldn't ignore the crazy growth of craft beer in this state," Self said. "It employs thousands and thousands of people here now. It's become a part of our daily lives.

"They've taken a great deal of pride in it. I don't think there's any way to overstate the kind of positive exposure we're gonna get."

Tickets for the attraction at the state fair are $10. Proceeds will go toward research and marketing benefiting the state's craft beer industry.
