Greensboro man arrested, charged in Kinston murder investigation from 2007

KINSTON, Lenoir County - Kinston Police announced the arrest of a suspect in the murder of a man back in 2007.

James Leon Estep Jr., 33 of Greensboro, was arrested Friday shortly before 8 p.m. On Nov. 29, Kinston Police investigators obtained a warrant for the arrest of Estep for the crime of murder in this case. Estep, who was developed as a potential suspect early in the investigation and has remained a potential suspect for the past 10 years, was taken into custody without incident during a targeted traffic stop on 800 Block of Chestnut Street in Kinsto.

Estep was placed into the Lenoir County Jail pending a first appearance in Lenoir County District Court on Monday.

On Wednesday, March 14, 2007, Kenneth Roosevelt Cannon, 24, was shot and killed while standing in front of the 7 building of Carver Courts Apartments just after 9 p.m. The investigation continues and people are asked to call Kinston Police Department's Tips Line at (252) 939-2040 or Lenoir County Crime Stoppers at (252) 523-4444.
