Five suspects charged in local pharmacy break-in

OTWAY, Carteret County - Five suspects were arrested following a break-in at a local pharmacy.

The Carteret County Sheriff's Office shared the following post on their Facebook page detailing the arrests and crime:

On 12/20/2017, Carteret County deputies arrested five people in connection with the breaking and entering of the Express Care Pharmacy, 708 Hwy 70 East Otway, that occurred in the early morning hours of Tuesday 12/19/2017.

Detective with the Sheriffs Office were able to develop quick leads in the case and determine who was responsible for the crime in which the front door of the pharmacy was smashed and over $124,000.00 in medications were stolen. Items stolen included Morphine, Oxycodone, Adderall, Amphetamines, Fentanyl, and Hydromorphone just to name a few.

Late last night into the early morning hours of Wednesday Carteret County detectives were able to recover an portion of the stolen medications at both Guthrie and Miranda's residence. During the investigation, three more suspects were arrested for their role after they received a portion of the total 7,400 dosage units of stolen medications.

Melton Duffy Guthrie, 41, of Old Winberry Road, Newport was charged with Breaking & Entering, Larceny after Breaking and Entering, Trafficking Opiates, Injury to Property, and Possession of Burglary Tools. Guthrie was placed in the Carteret County Jail under a two-million dollar bond and scheduled for his first court appearance on 12/20/2017.

Justin Ryan Miranda, 25, of Old Winberry Road, Newport was charged with Breaking & Entering, Larceny after Breaking and Entering, Trafficking Opiates, Injury to Property, and Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver Methamphetamines. Miranda was placed in the Carteret County Jail under a four-million dollar bond and scheduled for his first court appearance on 12/20/2017.

Kaylie Danielle Miranda, 23, of Old Winberry Road, Newport was charged with Possession of Stolen Medications, Trafficking Opiates, and Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver Methamphetamines. Miranda was placed in the Carteret County Jail under a two-million dollar bond and scheduled for her first court appearance on 12/20/2017.

Charles Makeley Willis III, 25, of Channel Rock Road, Otway, was charged with Possession of Stolen Medications, Trafficking Opiates, and Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver Methamphetamines. Willis was placed in the Carteret County Jail under a two-million dollar bond and scheduled for his first court appearance on 12/20/2017.

Cody James Bell, 26, of Old Winberry Road, Newport was charged with Possession of Stolen Medications, Trafficking Opiates, and Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver Methamphetamines. Willis was placed in the Carteret County Jail under a two-million dollar bond and scheduled for his first court appearance on 12/20/2017.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the case and determine if additional charges will are obtained. Detectives will be working with pharmacy officials to determine the amount of recovered medication.

Carteret County Sheriff Asa Buck said his detectives made this case an immediate priority in an effort to recover as much of the stolen medications as possible before they hit the streets. "It was doubly important that we conclude this case as quickly as possible to identify and arrest the individuals who committed the crime and also to keep these drugs from falling into the wrong hands. Our detectives did great job working this case and making these arrests in less than 24 hours following the incident".
