HOLLY RIDGE, Onslow County - A controlled burn that got out of control closed Hwy. 17 and forced some people from their homes has been contained, Onslow County officials said.

Houses in Onslow County were being evacuated after a woods fire broke out around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, according to Emergency Services Director Norman Bryson. He said houses in the area of Folkstone Road and within a quarter mile of the intersection of Hwy. 17 were being evacuated. Anyone in this area was being sent to the Sneads Ferry Branch Library on Hwy. 210.

Hwy. 17 was opened just after 5 p.m. and officials said shortly after that the fire was contained and people were allowed to go back to their homes.

Around 40 acres was burned, according to Onslow County Fire Marshall Brian Kelly. The fire will be allowed to continue to burn throughout the night with officials from The N.C. Forest Service checking on it often.
